Chapter III
COP24 in Katowice
Each year, Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activities are celebrated and recognized at a special award ceremony, or “Showcase Event,” at the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
The 2018 Showcase Event recognized the 15 winners of the 2018 Momentum for Change Awards. These winning activities comprise an impressive range of projects and personal stories that touch on sustainability, climate protection, environmental consciousness and social responsibility. At the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 24) in Katowice, Poland, the 15 Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activities were celebrated during an exciting award ceremony, followed by a performance by American cellist Ben Sollee.
UN Climate Change Deputy Executive Secretary Ovais Sarmad highlighted the importance of sharing practical examples of what real climate action looks like with the world. “That's why your work is so important,” said Mr. Sarmad. “And it's why these awards are about more than shining a light on your projects; they're a recognition that you are beacons guiding us towards a better future.” The award ceremony was hosted by Bertrand Piccard, UNEP Goodwill Ambassador and Solar Impulse CEO. “These solutions should be understood as logical and not just ecological,” said Mr. Piccard. “Even if there was no climate change, it would make absolute perfect sense to implement renewable energy, energy efficiency, new types of industries, new ways for the poorest communities to have access to health.”
